Smith announces additional funding for wildland fire program
Graydon Smith, MPP for Parry Sound Muskoka announced at Queen’s Park yesterday that the province is investing over $5 million to support wildland firefighting staff for the 2024 fire season. This includes an incentive payment of up to $5,000 for front-line fire and aviation personnel and a $1,000 one time payment for support staff.
These measures aim to attract and retain personnel while recognizing their critical role in protecting communities and natural resources. The government is also creating over 100 permanent positions to strengthen the wildland fire program and enhance career opportunities for staff.
Graydon Smith, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry says “In addition to this incentive, we continue to explore longer-term strategies and solutions to support attraction and retention of critical jobs for future years.”
